Lifeguarding Certification Courses

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies as well as provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
This course is taught in a blended-learning format with required online coursework that must be completed prior to the first in-person session.

Prerequisites:
- Complete a Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence consisting of 150-yard front crawl or breaststroke swim, a 2-minute tread using only your legs, then a 50-yard front crawl or breaststroke swim.
- Complete a Timed Object Retrieval consisting of a 20-yard swim, then a feet- or head-first surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object in 7-10 feet of water, then resurface and swim with the 10-pound object back to the starting point, then exiting the water without the use of a ladder or stairs. This sequence must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Lifeguard Instructor Certification
Courses
Ages 17+
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the basic-level courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.
This course is taught in a blended-learning format with required online coursework that must be completed prior to the first in-person session.

Prerequisites:
- Possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.
- Obtain instructor and participant course materials before starting the course.
- Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course prior to the pre-course session.
- Successfully complete the prerequisite skill assessment scenario to continue in the course. The prerequisite skill assessment scenario evaluates the following skills:
- Entry
- Swimming approach
- Surface dive in deep water (7 to 10 feet)
- Passive submerged rescue
- Rapid extrication (with an assisting rescuer)
- Rapid assessment
- Single-rescuer CPR (3 minutes)
Lifeguard Instructor & Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Recertification
Courses
Ages 17+
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) & Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT) Recertification course is to give instructors and instructor trainers the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification. Successfully completing this course is the only method for maintaining certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding instructor or Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer.
This course is taught in a blended-learning format with required online coursework that must be completed prior to the first in-person session.

Prerequisites for Lifeguard Instructors:
- Possess a current, or expired by no more than 1-year, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification.
- Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course prior to the in-person session.
Prerequisites for Lifeguard Instructor Trainers:
- Possess a current, or expired by no more than 1-year, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification.
- Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course prior to the in-person session.
Water Safety Instructor Certification Courses
Ages 15+
The purpose of this instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, Adult Swim, Private Lessons, Water Safety Courses and Water Safety Presentations.
This course includes a blended-learning that includes online coursework that must be completed prior to the beginning of the in-person session.

Prerequisites:
- Swim the following strokes consistent with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4:
- Front Crawl – 25 yards
- Back Crawl – 25 yards
- Breaststroke – 25 yards
- Elementary Backstroke – 25 yards
- Sidestroke – 25 yards
- Butterfly – 15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute

First Aid/CPR/AED Certification Courses

The American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED program is designed to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. This Lay Responder level course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person when minutes matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.
This program is taught in a blended learning format with required online work that must be completed prior to the in-person session.

Babysitter's Training Courses
Ages 11-15

The American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training program is designed to provide preteens and teens who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care, basic first aid, and a certification in Pediatric CPR/AED skills.
This course includes a blended-learning that includes online coursework that must be completed prior to the beginning of the in-person session.
